Aloha Friday Message – June 4, 2010 – “Can I get an AMEN?”

1023AFC060410
This week’s selected verse: Acts 3:19
NAB Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away,…
KJV Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, …

And along the same lines …

Luke 15:7 I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.

Acts 2:38 38 Peter (said) to them, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call.

Acts 17:30 God has overlooked the times of ignorance, but now he demands that all people everywhere repent 31 because he has established a day on which he will ‘judge the world with justice’ through a man he has appointed, and he has provided confirmation for all by raising him from the dead.”

Luke 24:46-47 46 And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day 47 and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

Now for some lighter fare…

From my travelin’ buddy, NS:

A Sunday school teacher asked her class if anyone could quote the entire 23rd Psalm.

A golden-haired, four-and-a-half-year-old girl was among those who raised their hands. A bit skeptical, the teacher asked if she could really quote the entire psalm. The little girl came to the front of the room, faced the class, made a perky little bow, and said, “The Lord is my shepherd, that’s all I want.”

She bowed again and went and sat down.

That may well be the greatest interpretation of the 23rd Psalm ever heard.

A favorite from the past: An elderly gentleman was serving as usher for the 9:30 service. Just as the congregation had finished the first hymn and was sitting down to listen to the sermon, a young man with dreadlocks, wearing sandals and very dirty jeans topped by a torn tee-shirt wandered into the church and sat down in the middle of the center aisle of the church. The congregation noticed this and sort of held their collective breath. The Pastor stepped up the pulpit and began his sermon. Everyone was wondering what would happen. Would there be a scene? Would the young man be escorted out? Would someone say something about this? Here’s what actually happened.

The usher walked slowly up the aisle, and despite his arthritis, lowered himself down to the floor to sit next to the young man. He did not want him to be alone there in the middle of the church. That, my friends, is agape love in action.

The Picnic
A Jewish Rabbi and a Catholic Priest met at the town’s annual 4th of July picnic. Old friends, they began their usual banter.

“This baked ham is really delicious,” the priest teased the rabbi. “You really ought to try it. I know it’s against your religion, but I can’t understand why such a wonderful food should be forbidden! You don’t know what you’re missing. You just haven’t lived until you’ve tried Mrs. Hall’s prized Virginia Baked Ham. Tell me, Rabbi, when are you going to break down and try it?”

The rabbi looked at the priest with a big grin, and said, “At your wedding.”

Why go to Church?

If you’re spiritually alive, you’re going to love this! If you’re spiritually dead, you won’t want to read it. If you’re spiritually curious, there is still hope!

A Church-goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. “I’ve gone for 30 years now,” he wrote, “and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can’t remember a single one of them. So, I think I’m wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all.”

This started a real controversy in the “Letters to the Editor” column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:

“I’ve been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this….

They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!” When you are DOWN to nothing… God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible, and receives the impossible!

Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!

When Satan is knocking at your door, simply say, “Jesus, could you get that for me?”

And wrapping things up today, something from my good buddy CW. He was the first to send it, but I received it from a few other folks too. It really is something that’s so good that you’ll want to see it more than once.

Some of you have probably seen the self-descriptive rhyming spiel by George Carlin. It has been floating around the Internet for quite a while now, and it is fun to listen to. I don’t know how long it took him to string together all of those adjectives – much less how long it took to memorize it – but it’s a fair approximation of what being human is all about. There is another rhymed spoken description making the rounds lately. This one, however, is not self-descriptive, not based on terms the World accepts. It is about the salvation available in, and only in, Christ.

This is a remarkably-well done statement about the importance of making a lifetime commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord. Pay careful attention and in just 1 minute 41 seconds you will hear the renunciation of the World and the importance of confessing Christ. View it and Pass It On!!

I’ll wait while you watch.*

I can tell you this: If you cannot find room for Him in your heart, in your life, in your future, then you are literally in for one Hell of a surprise when you die. Please don’t wait. Please don’t hesitate. Please don’t rationalize away the opportunity to let Jesus come into your heart. If you don’t think a church is the way to associate yourself with Jesus because churches are full of hypocrites, be aware you are putting a hypocrite between you and God. You can find God at the beach, or in the mountains, or maybe even the golf course; but you cannot enjoy the fellowship and communion of the community of Christ’s people without going to where they are. All the World can give you – at its very best – is physical comfort, and that is only temporary. In Christ alone you can find the Peace that surpasses all understanding eternally.

Why would you want anything less than that? You can have eternal, everlasting Life through Him, with Him, and in Him only. Seek Him with a sincere and humble heart. Nothing else and no one else can take His place as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Not Nature, not meditation, not “The Force,” not self-enlightenment, not drugs, not gurus, not the World, not money or fame or personal glory, and believe-it-or-else not even religion can save your Life forever and ever. Even pagans are super-religious, but they are not saved. Beloved, go to Him, and your Joy will be complete. Turn your life around by turning it over before you’re turned under.

Whatever, whenever, wherever, whoever, however, if ever, forever — at your service, Beloved

Yes, I love you that much.

Aloha Friday Message – May 28, 2010

1022AFC052810
Today’s Bible verse in John 16:33. I asked a long-time MBN member to make the choice for today’s message, and I’m glad it turned out to be about a subject presented often in the Aloha Friday Cards: Peace. Here is the text:

NIV “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

KJV These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

NAB “I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.”

What is the origin of this Peace? In this passage the peace that overcomes the tribulations we have in the world and the struggles we have with the world is found in Christ and with Christ. In Christ who is love. With Christ who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. In Christ through whom all things (including us) were made. With Christ who completes our joy. The word most used in the New Testament for peace is ειρήνη – eirene {i-ray’-nay}. It is the word which became the name Irene. The source of the Peace we need is Christ. Wherever there is Peace, Christ brings it. Wherever Peace is not, Christ has still conquered whatever prevents it from being discernible. “[Peace] is the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot, of whatsoever sort that is. It is the blessed state of devout and upright (virtuous) women and men [during their Christ-centered life] and after death. (Paraphrase of Strong’s Note 1515) John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.” The world expects payment or repayment for its “gifts.” Christ does not. He has commanded Peace to be with us, within us, between us, around us, and for us. Peace comes with Him, within Him, around Him, and for all time.

How is this Peace given to us?
John 20:19 It was the evening of the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked because they were afraid of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, “Peace be with you.” It comes to us regardless of our fears, regardless of what the World brings against us, and it finds us even when we hide. It is a gift, a grace, an unmerited favor from the heart of Christ to our hearts. The word we find used in the New Testament for Grace is χαρις charis {khar’-ece} “It is that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, loveliness: grace of speech, good will, loving-kindness, and the Gift of Salvation. It speaks of the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns us to Christ; how He keeps, strengthens, increases us in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles us to exercise of Christian virtues.” (Paraphrase from Strong’s Notes 5485). So this gift of Peace, the Peace which originates in and belongs to Christ, is given to us to become our peace so that our joy can be complete.

What is the location of this Peace? Col 3:15 “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” So, the Peace of Christ comes from His heart and dwells in our Heart. Just as we are created in the image of God as Spirit, we are re-created in the heart of Christ as Peace. We become the peace of Christ by living His life in us. 2nd Corinthians 13:11 “Finally, brothers, rejoice. Mend your ways, encourage one another, agree with one another, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you.” – Live in peace … Possess peace, be at peace, make peace, cultivate peace, keep peace, be held in peace, seek and ensure harmony, be peace. This Greek verb, eireneuo {i-rane-yoo’-o}, is in present tense, active voice, imperative mood. It is saying: Peace: Do it now.

What is the Effect of this Peace? John 15:11 “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” What a joy it is to know Peace! How wonderful it is to know the World cannot overcome us! (I am reminded to quote this to you again: “Everything turns out good in the end. If it’s not good yet, it’s not the end yet!”) If we have Peace and Joy, how can we keep from rejoicing? PHILIPPIANS 4:4-8 (NAB) 4 “Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! 5 Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. 6 Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. 7 Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

Think of friends praying in the moonlight for you.

Think of friends, praying in the moonlight for you. That is a Gift of Peace from Jesus to you. Honor the Giver by accepting the gift and then sharing it with anyone and everyone.

Whatever, whenever, wherever, whoever, however, if ever, forever — at your service.

Pray for KT that Satan will leave him alone so he can regain Peace. Pray for MN & DN that the crisis they are dealing with will be a gift of Peace and Love. Unite your prayers with the prayers of RS that his servant-leadership will open the way for the Spirit. Pray for FP that Jesus will be his teacher in all things. Remember to pray for JC and JC-B for healing of their tumors. Pray for DP’s children – natural and spiritually-adopted – that they will seek and accept the gifts of Peace and Joy. Pray for CID and the whole family – indeed for all families suffering in the world-wide economic meltdown – for economic stability and a home to share together, success for the children, health for all, wisdom and courage and strength for the tasks at hand, and most of all the Hope that is always in the company of Peace, Joy, and Love.

Peace be with you, Beloved. I always love you.

Aloha Friday Message – May 21, 2010

1021AFC052110

Happy Aloha Friday, Beloved! I was thinking about you on the way to work today. I am always grateful to God for the love he gave to me along with the people he gave me with whom I can share His love. When I think about the hundreds of people He has put into my life just so I can love them with the love He gave me, I am just blown away. You’re there. You are in my life so I can love you.

All the other things that come from that or go along with that are unexpected and unmerited blessings — Grace. How cool is it to know that loving you is fulfilling God’s will? Way cool! I love you because you are made lovable by God and that’s just too amazing to get past. I’ve been reading passages in James. This section is very reassuring, especially when we face difficulties in our lives. “Why me? Why this? Why now?” Beloved, I do not know those answers, but I know the One who does. Here is wisdom from James 1:2-17

Trials and Temptations
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6 But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

Temporal needs and temptations
9 The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position. 10 But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business. 12 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. 13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

The source of all good things
16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, so that we might be a kind of first fruits of all he created.

Beloved, Love is the ultimate “good and perfect gift.” I cannot describe the joy I know because WE can share that gift effortlessly with each other. Thank you for opening up your heart to give and to receive that gift. When I send these messages off, I take a moment to read through the E-Mail addresses. I want to have you cross my mind as this note wings its way toward you. I want you to know when you read it that you were on my mind as I wrote and sent it.

This week’s Bible verses are very familiar. So familiar in fact, that it is easy to read past them without reading in them. Sometimes we’re sort of zoned out when we are fed by The Word. Read these two verses again, but read them out loud – as if you were using them to witness, to convince someone of their power and truth:

John 3:16-17
NIV 16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”
KJV For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

The word missing in the NIV translation is “begotten.” Long story short: God fathered Jesus; caused the pregnancy that gave rise to the Word made flesh. In both translations we find the word “perish.” We know, of course, that perish means die, but we also know that in the context of this verse it means eternal death in contrast to eternal life.

I think of “eternal” and “everlasting” as slightly different connotations. They are synonyms for each other, of course, but for me eternal carries a connotation of perpetual or even better interminable – it can’t be stopped. For me, everlasting connotes something that is constantly renewed. It never ages. It is not subject to temporal progression. It is always instantly renewed. I tend to envision eternal as “over yonder, beyond the River, past the Pearly Gates. But my image of everlasting is more “here-side” – it is happening right now as you read these words if you believe in Him. If you believe Jesus is the Christ, the risen Lord, the living and only begotten Son of Continue reading

Aloha Friday message – May 14, 2010

1020AFC051410

This week’s Bible Verse: John 15:16 It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. AND 2 Corinthians 3:5 Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God,

Aloha pumehana, ‘Ōmea …Warmest Aloha, Beloved. Today I want to write about LIGHT. There are so many things in Scripture that refer to or are associated with light. It was the first object of creation. It is the Creator Themselves (One Creator, Three Persons – the Speaker, the Spirit, and the Light (see the Gospel of John, Chapter 1). Literally thousands of books and gazillions of words have been written about these and many more references to light. The Light I specifically want to address is yours.

How about starting with John 8:12? When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am The Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the Light of Life.” And in John 1:1-4, John tells us

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things* came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be 4 through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; 5 the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. * [including your light, Beloved]

There are some people I know – you probably can name a few in your life – in whom that Light is more evident, easier to see, and whenever I look at them I see how different they are from me. You know what I mean, yes? Some people call it “wholesome” as in decent, clean, honest, moral, upright, someone with plenty of integrity and plenty more energy for doing good things. Go through your mental photo albums and pick out a few. How do they do that? How do they radiate that light? Believe me, I wish I knew. I think it comes, in part, from being virtuous, and in that sense “wholesomeness” is equivalent to “holiness.” And it is holiness that shows, that inspires, that motivates; it is holiness with very few impurities – so few, in fact, that it is by contrast well out of the ordinary.

This display of virtue, or the light of holiness, can be seen and both men and women, in Christians (JP2 for example) and non-Christians (Gandhi for example), in every age group from infants to the very old. In the people who have this life-force characteristic, the effect is stop-and-stare beautiful. It is a state of life which many try to cultivate, and rightly so because it is evidence of achieving harmony between self, God, and others. These persons certainly do not lead charmed lives free of suffering and refulgent with confidence; indeed they are often the poor, the marginalized, the widowed and orphaned, and the innocents. It seems like their light is effortless; sometimes they are not even aware of its presence or effect.

There are organizations which try to promote this characteristic – some openly and honestly, and some with ulterior motives. Most religions promote holiness and the emulation of God’s love and mercy; every one has a Golden Rule in some form or another that is a reflection of a Deity’s beneficence. There are organizations that promote virtue for women and valor for men. Some sell products and services to help men and women access these concepts through spiritual exercises or outward signs such as jewelry or wardrobe items. Try an Internet search and you will find a wide range of these kinds of organizations. Certainly it seems good to work toward cultivating awareness of and commitment to virtue and valor and one could argue that you cannot have one without the other for it take virtue to be truly valorous and valor to be truly virtuous.

I remember a Radio Preacher’s sermon on the thirty-first chapter of Proverbs. One statement he made struck me as particularly and elegantly insightful. He said, “There is nothing in this world more beautiful than a virtuous woman serving the Lord.” I thought about all the difficulties women have endured for millennia because they were deemed lesser in every way because of their gender. You know what I have often said about women: Naturally they are not the lesser; they are certainly deserving of all equitable consideration and treatment. In fact, I argue that women are the better part of humanity. Man was made from dirt. Woman was made from flesh and bone. Better ingredients, better people. OK, so I probably sound a little flippant there, but I say that to illustrate that indeed there is little in this world that can outshine the Light one sees in a life lived with virtue and valor. And that applies to both men and women, boys and girls, saints and sinners.

You Are The Light of The World

Receive The Light ...

Some people mirror/reflect THE LIGHT. Some people obscure The Light. Some people oppose The Light. Some people carry in them The Light. I think we are attracted to them most because we, too, would like to carry THE LIGHT. It has been said, “If you believe you lack righteousness, behave as though you actually have it and eventually you will.” Righteousness, Holiness, The Light I can see a bumper sticker coming: Got Light? And it is not “Gotalightmac?” It is “Got The Light?” What we do says who we are. Actions speak louder than words.

In these times, some claim this to be the End Times, there is much Darkness to overcome. Join hands, so to speak, with those you see who carry The Light. Thank them for being a Light in your life. Don’t be deceived by those who claim to have it but hide it, and don’t be too quick to assume that only a chosen few carry The Light. You go ahead be one of the candles. You have a wick as the core you’re your being – offer it up. For “You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:14-16

So, with Paul, let us accept that we are all called to be vessels for The Light. “For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We are not of the night or of darkness. Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and sober. Those who sleep go to sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we are of the day, let us be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love and the helmet that is hope for salvation. For God did not destine us for wrath, but to gain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live together with him.” 1 Thessalonians 5:5-10

Rather than “The Force be with you” I commission you, “May The Light be in you!”
Please continue to support Justin as he goes through this next phase of his eternal life. Remember MN and MC as they deal with their cancer. Pray for the conversions of PJ, AT my niece, and all who oppose or obscure The Light along with those who believe The Light is a marketable possession rather than a precious gift. Finally, Beloved, share The Light by standing with those who carry It. What you do says who you are. Where you stand is where your shadow starts. What you illuminate is that which is no longer hidden.

I love you for The Light has shone upon you and you are so beautiful to me. That is more than adequate because it is from God – he chose you to bear the Fruit of Light.

Whatever, whenever, wherever, whoever, however, if ever, forever — at your service, Beloved!

Aloha Friday Message – May 7, 2010 – My Mission

1019AFC050710

Today’s Bible Verse 1 CORINTHIANS 15:10a
NIV: But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. KJV: But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain.

I am what I am. Today I am going back to last Sunday’s Healing Word: Testify. So what am I?

I am what I am. I can remember back in High School answering that question, or a form of that question, “Who Are You?” I was in a national youth group called Christian Endeavor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_People%27s_Society_of_Christian_Endeavour). When challenged with that question, we would respond, “I am a child of God first. I am a son and a brother second. I am … An officer in the Colorado CE Organization; A TJ Spartan; Charles O. Todd, III; and so on. As my life drew on and I learned more about the world, I became a student at Hope college, then at Metropolitan State College, then an Airman 2nd, then Crucita’s husband, a Med Tech, a manager, a graduate student. The first two answers pretty much stayed the same, but to the second one I added the roles of husband and father.

Now, as time goes by I am most like to answer “What/Who are you?” by saying, “I am old (and I am), or “I am happy (and that is definitely true), but there is more. I am what I am. “What are you?”

I am what I am, I am intolerant. Try as I might to shake it there are so many things that get to me in ways I do not like. I get flustered trying to deal with the things that irritate me, most especially with my own irritation. I say or do things that do not reflect what I profess. That is so irritating! Even those around me, especially those who love me most, are quick (and correct) to point out my intolerance and my flying off the handle when pushed to my very narrow limits. Sometimes I cannot tolerate my intolerance.

I am what I am. I am impatient. You can see and hear it when I am driving. It’s most flagrant when people speed past me going well over the speed limit, or run a stop sign without slowing down, or activate on their turn signal after they’ve started turning. Sounds a lot like intolerance, but it’s often quicker to flare up and quicker to burn out. The intolerance seems to last…well, way longer that I want. I am impatient when people can’t tell me, succinctly, what they need done or what is wrong. I am impatient when I have to do something over and over because of my mistakes or, worse, the mistakes of others.

I am what I am. I am self-important and arrogant to the point of being a jerk. I can remember arguing with a teacher that 5,200 read as fifty-two-hundred and should be written as 52,00. “My Dad says fifty-two-hundred dollars. I know that’s right!” I get an idea in my head and carry it to its “logical” (read absurd) extreme. When I have to back down, it’s a pretty noisy process. When I make a whopper-mistake, it is accompanied by lots of self-justification. That makes me feel and sound even more arrogant, and that makes me even more stubborn.

I am what I am. I am certainly stubborn. All of the above should make that clear. I am what I am, and it’s pretty hard to get me to be something else. Sometimes I have to pretend to be something else long enough that I can become that something else. I can leave out the most important understanding of something because I am too stubborn to let go of what I want. If you go back and look at the verse, St. Paul points out something that I overlook in all of these “I am” situations: “But, by the grace of God…”

So if I am all these things, how is that “by the grace of God?” He surely doesn’t want me to be like that, right? No, of course that is not what he wants. He wants me to be like him, but I just can’t seem to get there. So, what do you think he does about it?

He gets there for me. Think of your greatest failing or besetting sin, or whatever it is that creates disharmony between you and God and between you and the people he has given you to love. Think of that as a big pile of behaviors you just don’t want as part of your life, things you want to leave behind. Climb that big pile, stand on your tip-toes, and reach out as high and as far as you can. You will still not be able to reach what you need to pull you out of that mess, so Jesus will actually reach out to you and pull you up and away from all that.

If you want to be where Jesus is, you have to go where he is going; you have to follow him, run after him, reach out for him as if you were playing some sort of Celestial tag, and then, WHAM! He turns around and tags you. He calls you by name and takes you with him. And sometimes you don’t even have to chase after him; he just finds you on your pile and carries you away in Joy. Or if you are in the deepest pit of depression and desolation, he climbs down and gathers you up in his arms. Either way, you will find such serenity that you begin to wonder why you didn’t do that in the first place. After all, isn’t the first answer “I am a child of God?” How quickly we forget!

So, I am intolerant, impatient, arrogant, and stubborn (and a few more to be sure!). These thorns in my roses are reminders that I am weak and that he is strong. In Second Corinthians 12, Paul writes, “but he [Jesus] said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.’ I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me. Therefore, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong.” I don’t have much in the way of “insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints” in my life because he keeps blessing me no matter how badly I mess up. I have little or nothing to boast about except that when I am at my worst, he is there to humble me with his love and save me with his grace.

That brings to mind another image from those days in CE: A T-Shirt that said, “Be patient with me! God’s not finished with me yet.” And because of that, I am hopeful, happy, committed to him, and ready to plod on toward Calvary where my weaknesses will be washed away in his blood. There, when he was absolutely hopeless, helpless, and alone – that is when he called me by name. In doing so, he assures me, and everyone who hears his voce and follows him, that we need not be hopeless, helpless, or utterly alone “For lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” To prove that, he is always there to turn my intolerant, impatient, stubborn, arrogant, and sinful life into the very thing he is for all of us: Love.

Whatever, whenever, wherever, whoever, however, if ever, forever — at your service, Beloved.

Please remember to keep praying for Justin, his mom and dad, and his siblings. A miracle is not out of the question; just pray it will be the miracle Justin, his family, and all his loved-ones need. Remember to give thanks for MG who wants us to praise God for the fact that she is doing so well in her battle against stomach cancer. Also rejoice with CW&GW that G’s tumor is g-o-n-e-gone. Pray for all the Peoples to value life over death and that all leaders will govern with morality, compassion, wisdom, and justice. Pray for the MBN that all of us will manifest the Love of God in all our weaknesses. His graces to us will not be without effect. To that I can testify. IT IS MY MISSION TO DO SO

MY MISSION
and the values that support it
I am a Champion
My mission is to be a helper, whether by leading or by following, in all of the roles in my life.

➡ The first role is that of a family member. My mission is a sacred vocation to be son and brother, husband and father.

➡ The second role is that of intercessor. My mission is a willing obligation to be instant and constant in prayer for others.

➡ The third role is that of a servant. My mission is a prudent use of my God-given abilities to acquire and use knowledge and skills which can be an encouragement to others.

This threefold mission is supported by the following values:

💡 What we do says what we are. Actions speak louder than words.

💡 Whatever is not given is lost. It is what we decide we can live without that makes us unique.

💡 Happiness is wanting what you have, not having what you want. Use of our spiritual and temporal gifts must be based on prudent stewardship and not on selfish motivations.

💡 There are no inconsequential acts. We must be willing to be held accountable for the way our actions change the lives of others.

In consideration of this mission and these values, there is only one goal:

Continuous improvement based on continuous feedback.

Important update – Justin – May 5, 2010

This is the latest word from Justin’s mom. It is difficult to read. I have assured Mom that Justin will receive, in fact has received, 100% healing. It seems there is a good chance, though, that it might not be manifested for us in this world.

Aloha!

This update comes very hard…….

We went to his appointment this afternoon….after the tumor board met yesterday, it was decided that the physicians are unable to treat his tumor because it has progressed so fast. From last week Thursday to today, it went from 6 months to maybe sooner.

We are still in California, waiting for the people from “Make A Wish” Foundation to come and meet with him for his wishes. He wishes for all of us…bothers and sisters included to go to Disney World, a netbook, and a Play Station 3 unit with his own TV. He did enjoy Chuck E Cheese earlier today.

All I ask is to say a prayer for him that perhaps a miracle may happen…..this is getting too hard….. I’ll go for now and send another update later.

Regards
cathy

Please continue your prayerful support for Justin, his siblings, and his parents. Ask our Lord to help them all as they travel through this phase of his Journey. Thank you, MBN. There is Power in this Prayer: “Not my will, but thine be done.”

Aloha Friday Message – April 9, 2010

1015AFC040910

Happy Aloha Friday!!

JOHN 1:12-13
NAB But to those who did accept Him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in His name, 13 who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision but of God.
KJV 12 But as many as received Him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

JOHN 1:1-5
NAB 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came to be through Him, and without Him nothing came to be. What came to be 4 through Him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; 5 the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.

KJV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

The message I sent last week was not the message I intended to send. That message got “preempted” by another Source. I was supposed to write about “Chapter 1 verse 12 of John.” That quote is from a song I sang as a child called The Assurance March. That particular line was part of the bridge (the connecting music between verses) and the whole line of the lyric goes “Chapter 1 verse 12 of John is the ground we stand upon.”

John 1:12

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_nnNX4rkBg6U/RgYcVmqco4I/AAAAAAAAAD4/xfg6AhVbh1Q/s1600-h/Assurance+March.jpg (copy and paste)

So that verse is a foundational verse, one on which tenets of faith are built – part of the Christian creed, or doctrine, or belief. I still want to say a little something about that, so here goes:

This is a tenet of faith in that it helps us define “the children of God … born … of God. Long story short is that comes about by believing in Him (John 3:16-17) and through baptism. Baptized believers are children of God, joint-heirs with Christ, and recipients of Christ’s participation in Creation which is and was and will be the Light of Life. That Light is, was, and always will be Christ. Everything that is Good comes from that Light – “God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God, Begotten not made, Consubstantial with the Father, Through Him all things were made.” (From the Nicene Creed; the Profession of Faith).

Important stuff, and whole books are written about these passages. Sermon series that cover weeks are based on the first chapter of John. It is one of the most-powerful and most-quoted chapters in the bible and certainly a gem in the Gospel.

Since it would have been a Good Friday message, there would have been some discussion of how to survive those tests of faith we encounter so often in our lives. Sometimes things happen that we just cannot understand – like the death of a child, the betrayal of innocence, or pointless violence. These things are often difficult to comprehend even within our Christian understanding of life. This too is something about which much has been written – why bad things happen to good people (and the converse of that, why good things happen to bad people). Again, there is a short answer which is inadequate only if you don’t believe that the longer answer isn’t any different from the short answer. The short answer is, “with God all things are possible.” The good and the bad happen, but it all happens within God’s knowing of it. Victims exist and God knows the how and why of that existence. He does not produce the victim or the circumstances that result in victims.

Another side of this is when we ourselves do something stupid so that we (or someone else) become a victim because of our actions, our choices. I often marvel that God, who is omniscient, does not remember the spectacularly stupid things I have done. He’s forgotten them, forgiven them, but still knows about them. How is that possible? Because he is also omnipotent and it is within His power to master this dichotomy of knowing and at the same time forgiving and forgetting my stupidity, my sin. I don’t think he likes to be reminded about those moments either. He’s done with them, and I think he would just as soon we were done with them, too. He doesn’t want us to be miserable, so I think he frowns on bringing up the past all the time and telling Him, “God I am so sorry I was so stupid back then.” If I remember doing something stupid, maybe that will serve as a reminder not to do it again, but that doesn’t mean I have to keep reliving it in my memory. Sometimes I still forget and do it again. That gives God something else to forgive and to forget.

And that is how His Might is shown in my weakness. It’s part of the way he designed His creation. It has built-in balances like that in everything you can find out about the Universe and Creation. Got free will? Got forgiveness for when you use it for stupid things. Got heaven for when you use it for good things. Got grace for when you can’t remember which is which. Got love for everything and every person in creation. Got Stupid? Got God’s wisdom when you ask for it (James 1:5 – But if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and he will be given it.)

I love you THIS much!!

It was God’s decision to offer you a place in the Kingdom as His child. It was God’s decision to let you live in The Kingdom as a free agent, able to choose good over evil, life over death. It was God’s decision to create you and call you by name to enjoy everything in your life – even the tough stuff. Believe me; I have seen a lot of the tough stuff in your life and mine. One of the free choices we have is the choice to accept Him and His forgiveness. We are all already forgiven, every single one of us from every single sin. Only one thing is required to make that truth complete in our lives: Become a child of God. Accept Him through whom all things were created. It is the ground we stand upon (see Ephesians 5:10-18b See especially Verse 14). and we can stand on that ground only because Jesus showed his love for his Father and for us in ways we cannot begin to understand.

Whatever, whenever, wherever, whoever, however, if ever, forever — at your service. Beloved pray for ALL the people, especially those who ask for our prayers, and for those who do not believe anyone will pray for them. We also pray that those who fear they cannot or should not be forgiven will find that God’s mercy exceeds all their fears.

Whatever, whenever, wherever, whoever, however, if ever, forever — at your service, Beloved. I am thinking of you – all of you – and the LOVE is overwhelming!

Next week we will have a guest columnist. I invite each of you in the MBN to send in something you would like to share with the members. It can be your own work, it can be “one of those things that goes around on the ‘net,” it can be just a line or two about your thoughts on a subject. This will allow us to hear a different voice once in a while. I usually won’t send out things that promise a miracle or change of luck if you do thus and such unless the content is really superb, but other than that, let me see your favorites and maybe they will become the favorites of others.

Happy Resurrection Day!! Sunday, April 4, 2010 – Easter

Aloha Friday Message – April 2, 2010 – Good Friday

1014AFC040210

Aloha Friday for this date is also Good Friday – The Day of the Lord’s Passion. We have considered the concept of Mercy throughout Lent. I hope I have not wearied you. If, however, I have, then here you will find an experience of mercy. This will be short – I hope.

When do we need mercy, and when do we get it? We need mercy, especially God’s mercy, always; I think we need mercy from each other whenever we can see an opportunity to give it. Must mercy always be requested; does someone have to ask, plead, or beg for mercy for us to give it? I hope not! Mercy is like respect. You cannot earn respect because that makes it a commodity, something that can be bought or sold. Respect is a gift that should be freely given. If the giver offers respect and the gift is rejected, then the intended recipient fails to gain respect. So also with mercy, I think. If we intend to perform an act of mercy – as we have discussed these several weeks – and the gift of mercy is rejected, then the intended recipient fails to gain mercy. It seems to me that God’s mercy is like that – only better of course – since it is always available to us and we have only to accept it. Mercy is a grace, a virtue, and a gift.

We get mercy when we are merciful. “Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy?” For whom? For those to whom they show mercy? Yes, of course that happens. For themselves? Perhaps not exactly in a give-one-get-one arrangement, though. God’s mercy is always there, and perhaps in giving mercy we are able to accept His mercy. What do you think about that?

And what happens when I refuse God’s mercy, or your mercy? Does mercy fade out, go away, or become extinct? Not if mercy is a gift of grace because grace is always available for those who will accept it. So the mercy is still there; we’re just not getting a share of it. Noah’s Ark was a mercy, a gift of grace. Only a handful of people accepted that grace. The Ark was still there even as the Flood overcame the world and drowned everyone and everything not on the Ark. The Ark did not go away, but the door to the Ark was shut.

So if God offers me mercy because of his integrity, his justice, and his love shall I wait a while to see if It’s a Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall? Why wait? Even if mercy is there forever, if I need it now, why not get it now? Why procrastinate when all that I need and so much more is right there waiting for me? I don’t really have to ask for it or beg for it. I just accept it with grateful recognition that “justice is getting what I deserve (good or bad) and mercy is getting what I do not deserve (always good).”

Beloved, accept Mercy. Know that all that is good in this world comes from Him who made all things and all persons. The flow of Mercy is impossible to stop but it can be resisted.

Have a wonderful Easter Tridium. I’m sending this out from home via automated mailing so that it will arrive Thursday afternoon (or evening from those of you on the East Coast).

As a closing thought, I submit this Psalm of a Sinner for you to consider:

Psalm of a Sinner
For the People, After Psalm 22 – O My God! My God! Why have I abandoned you? Why do I fail to cry for help; why am I dwelling in my anguish? My God, I ignore you by day and turn away your answers; at night I praise you not. Yet you are the Holy One and Faithful beyond comprehension, the LORD, God of Israel. My ancestors trusted in you and you rescued them. They cried out to you and were saved; you never let them down. But I am a weakling, choosing instead not to listen for your voice in my darkness. All who see me see my disloyalty; they scoff at my lack of virtue. “You claim to be the LORD’S? He rescues you and blesses you and still you have abandoned him.” Truly, my God, trouble is near, within and around me, before me and behind me. Yet you have kept me safe and blessed my life. From my birth you have called me to you. I answer and move toward you, but turn away your endless offers of help. Many deceivers attract me and their invitations draw me away from you. I am torn and crushed when they exploit my foolishness. My good deeds are lifeless and flow away like sewage. Artificial goodness melts in the warmth of your love. I collapse under the weight of my sin, and look forward to returning to the earth. Like feral dogs, my enemies chase me away from the safety of your arms. I had no strength to lose because I gave it all to them. You have never been far from me, yet I reach not for your hand. You enrich me with your graces, but I gamble them away. Indeed a sword is turned against me, the dogs tear my flesh. The Adversary is growling lion, destroying my life because I persist in my ignorance. You save me hour by hour, and I acknowledge your help in public; but my home is in the shadows, my life is void of light. Blessed are they who rely on you, whose integrity is like your own; they are not spurned by you nor do they spurn each other. Their praises rise up as testimony against me. Because I have not sought you, my praise falls lifeless at my feet and seeps into nameless obscurity. All the ends of the earth have known the saving power of your love; you rule in every faithful heart, in every life that welcomes you, you establish peace. I have desecrated my vows to you. I have abandoned your law and failed to give you homage. My God! My God! Why have I abandoned you? I entreat you to bless my descendants as your servants. I resolve to worship you and return to you, to bow down before you for worship, adoration, thanksgiving, and praise because of my love for you. Let every generation learn of your generosity through my disgrace which is pardoned because of your endless mercy and everlasting salvation. Even the unborn will proclaim the power of your amazing grace and those who have perished from the earth will shout for joy in the presence of the angels.
