Happy Aloha Friday, Beloved! Today I am thinking about saints, the citizens of Heaven. I want to be one someday, to take my place in Eternity with the rest of the saints, and I think all of us aspire to end up there. I don’t imagine I will exit this life as a Saint in the category of Sts. Francis, or Augustine, or Pio, or Damien. I might be able to live, however, in such a way that just living is a 24/7 prayer. I could be capable of letting my faith, discernment, humility, patience, and perseverance work together in such a way that I am transformed into the saint God intended me to be. Coulda, shoulda, woulda, eh? Yep. It’s a struggle just to get to square 1, much less anything beyond it. Maybe, just maybe, I could be like Carl. Here’s a story that circulates on the ‘net from time to time. See if you know someone like Carl.

Carl was a quiet man. He didn’t talk much. He would always greet you with a big smile and a firm handshake.

Even after living in our neighborhood for over 50 years, no one could really say they knew him very well.

Before his retirement, he took the bus to work each morning. The lonely sight of him walking down the street often worried us.

He had a slight limp from a bullet wound received in W.W.II. Watching him, we worried that although he had survived W.W.II, he may not make it through our changing uptown neighborhood with its ever-increasing random violence, gangs, and drug activity. When he saw the flyer at our local church asking for volunteers for caring for the gardens behind the minister’s residence, he responded in his characteristically unassuming manner. Without fanfare, he just signed up.

He was well into his 87th year when the very thing we had always feared finally happened. He was just finishing his watering for the day when three gang members approached him. Ignoring their attempt to intimidate him, he simply asked, “Would you like a drink from the hose?”The tallest and toughest-looking of the three said, “Yeah, sure,” with a malevolent little smile.

As Carl offered the hose to him, the other two grabbed Carl’s arm, throwing him down. As the hose snaked crazily over the ground, dousing everything in its way, Carl’s assailants stole his retirement watch and his wallet, and then fled.

Carl tried to get himself up, but he had been thrown down on his bad leg. He lay there trying to gather himself as the minister came running to help him. Although the minister had witnessed the attack from his window, he couldn’t get there fast enough to stop it. “Carl, are you okay? Are you hurt?” the minister kept asking as he helped Carl to his feet.

Carl just passed a hand over his brow and sighed, shaking his head. “Just some punk kids. I hope they’ll wise-up someday.” His wet clothes clung to his slight frame as he bent to pick up the hose. He adjusted the nozzle again and started to water.

Confused and a little concerned, the minister asked, “Carl, what are you doing?

“I’ve got to finish my watering. It’s been very dry lately,” came the calm reply. Satisfying himself that Carl really was all right, the minister could only marvel. Carl was a man from a different time and place.

A few weeks later the three returned. Just as before their threat was unchallenged. Carl again offered them a drink from his hose.

This time they didn’t rob him. They wrenched the hose from his hand and drenched him head to foot in the icy water. When they had finished their humiliation of him, they sauntered off down the street, throwing catcalls and curses, falling over one another laughing at the hilarity of what they had just done. Carl just watched them. Then he turned toward the warmth-giving sun, picked up his hose, and went on with his watering.

The summer was quickly fading into fall and Carl was doing some tilling when he was startled by the sudden approach of someone behind him. He stumbled and fell into some evergreen branches.

As he struggled to regain his footing, he turned to see the tall leader of his summer tormentors reaching down for him. He braced himself for the expected attack.

“Don’t worry old man, I’m not gonna hurt you this time.” The young man spoke softly, still offering the tattooed and scarred hand to Carl. As he helped Carl get up, the man pulled a crumpled bag from his pocket and handed it to Carl.

“What’s this?” Carl asked.

“It’s your stuff,” the man explained. “It’s your stuff back. Even the money in your wallet.”

“I don’t understand,” Carl said. “Why would you help me now?”

The man shifted his feet, seeming embarrassed and ill at ease. “I learned something from you,” he said. “I ran with that gang and hurt people like you. We picked you because you were old and we knew we could do it. But every time we came and did something to you, instead of yelling and fighting back, you tried to give us a drink. You didn’t hate us for hating you. You kept showing love against our hate.” He stopped for a moment.

“I couldn’t sleep after we stole your stuff, so here it is back.” He paused for another awkward moment, not knowing what more there was to say. “That bag’s my way of saying thanks for straightening me out, I guess.” And with that, he walked off down the street.

Carl looked down at the sack in his hands and gingerly opened it. He took out his retirement watch and put it back on his wrist. Opening his wallet, he checked for his wedding photo. He gazed for a moment at the young bride that still smiled back at him from all those years ago.

He died one cold day after Christmas that winter. Many people attended his funeral in spite of the weather.

In particular the minister noticed a tall young man that he didn’t know sitting quietly in a distant corner of the church.

The minister spoke of Carl’s garden as a lesson in life. In a voice made thick with unshed tears, he said, “Do your best and make your garden as beautiful as you can. We will never forget Carl and his garden.”

The following spring another flyer went up. It read: “Person needed to care for Carl’s garden.”The flyer went unnoticed by the busy parishioners until one day when a knock was heard at the minister’s office door. Opening the door, the minister saw a pair of scarred and tattooed hands holding the flyer. “I believe this is my job, if you’ll have me,” the young man said.

The minister recognized him as the same young man who had returned the stolen watch and wallet to Carl. He knew that Carl’s kindness had turned this man’s life around. As the minister handed him the keys to the garden shed, he said, “Yes, go take care of Carl’s garden and honor him.”The man went to work and, over the next several years, he tended the flowers and vegetables just as Carl had done.

In that time, he went to college, got married, and became a prominent member of the community. But he never forgot his promise to Carl’s memory and kept the garden as beautiful as he thought Carl would have kept it. One day he approached the new minister and told him that he couldn’t care for the garden any longer. He explained with a shy and happy smile, “My wife just had a baby boy last night, and she’s bringing him home on Saturday.”

“Well, congratulations!” said the minister, as he was handed the garden shed keys. “That’s wonderful! What’s the baby’s name?” “Carl,” he replied.

Carl’s story is a living example of the Gospel.

GOOD FRIENDS ARE LIKE ANGELS; YOU DON’T HAVE TO SEE THEM TO BELIEVE IN THEM. YOU DON’T EVEN HAVE TO HAVE YOUR WHOLE LIFE CHANGED BECAUSE OF THEIR PRESENCE. All you have to do is let them do what God sent them to do in your life. Thank you so much for letting me be part of YOUR life!

Carl had the personal conviction to stick to what he knew was right. Winston Churchill addressed that issue one by saying, ““Never give in, never give in, never; never; never; never – in nothing, great or small, large or petty – never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense.” Carl gave in only to honor and good sense. The unnamed young man learned that from Carl and carried it on in his own life. We used to ask our kids, “What do you want to do?” They were taught to always answer, “The right thing.” All of us sometimes forget that answer. Maybe if you remember Carl you can remember the answer because you will remember it was the way he lived his life. Wouldn’t you like to be the unnamed character in this story whether male or female?

What is the secret of living like a saint? “Do what you’re doing.” And do it because it is right. Be just and merciful, live righteously, and walk humbly before God and community. When we live like this moment by moment, in the moment and not for the moment, it will stretch into Eternity. “We’ve only just begun…” And that is the secret, I think. Always be at the beginning and there will never be an end.

Age Quod Ages — Do what you’re doing

Whatever, whenever, wherever, whoever, however, if ever, forever —

at your service.

My Personal Mission Statement

I mentioned this Mission Statement earlier this month. I even posted a portion of it. This is the whole thing, just as it hangs on the wall in my office:

My Mission

and the values that support it

I am a Champion

 My mission is to be a helper, whether by leading or by following, in all of the roles in my life.

†     The first role is that of a family member. My mission is a sacred vocation to be son and brother, husband and father.

†     The second role is that of intercessor. My mission is a willing obligation to be instant and constant in prayer for others.

†     The third role is that of a servant. My mission is a prudent use of my God-given abilities to acquire and use knowledge and skills which can be an encouragement to others.

This threefold mission is supported by the following values:

†     What we do says who we are. Actions speak louder than words

†     Whatever is not given is lost. It is what we decide we can live without that makes us unique

†     Happiness is wanting what you have, not having what you want. Use of our spiritual and temporal gifts must be based on prudent stewardship and not selfishness.

†     There are no inconsequential acts. We must be willing to be accountable for the way our actions change the lives of others.

In consideration of this mission and these values, there is only one goal:

Continuous improvement based on continuous feedback.

Motto: Age Quod Agis

“Do what you are doing.”

Aloha Friday Message – August 21, 2009 – Noah Was a Carpenter

934AFC082109

Noah was a carpenter.

I don’t know why that popped into my head. I was testing a new form I had made, and I typed in the word Noah to see if it would highlight it as a misspelled word. It did. As I looked at it, the rest of the sentence just flowed as I typed.

Noah was a carpenter.

I wonder if he knew that when he was growing up? More precisely he was a shipbuilder. Of course he couldn’t have known that because his was probably the first ship built. Based on the information we have from Genesis, it must have been a rough ride. Here’s some suggested reading from Ritchie’s Sermon Topics.

Coming Judgment Announced (Gen. 6:12, 13) 12 When God saw how corrupt the earth had become, since all mortals led depraved lives on earth, 13 he said to Noah: “I have decided to put an end to all mortals on earth; the earth is full of lawlessness because of them. So I will destroy them and all life on earth.

Noah believed the warning (Heb. 11:7) 7 by faith Noah, warned about what was not yet seen, with reverence built an ark for the salvation of his household. Through this he condemned the world and inherited the righteousness that comes through faith.

An Ark provided according to God (Gen. 6:14) 4 “Make yourself an ark of gopher wood, put various compartments in it, and cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you shall build it: the length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. 16 Make an opening for daylight in the ark, and finish the ark a cubit above it. Put an entrance in the side of the ark, which you shall make with bottom, second, and third decks.

God’s Invitation to enter, obeyed (Gen. 7:1) Then the LORD said to Noah: “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for you alone in this age have I found to be truly just.

Noah’s Security in God’s hand (Gen. 6:17-18) on my part, am about to bring the flood (waters) on the earth, to destroy everywhere all creatures in which there is the breath of life; everything on earth shall perish. 18 But with you I will establish my covenant; you and your sons, your wife and your sons’ wives, shall go into the ark.

God shut the door (Gen. 7:16) Those that entered were male and female, and of all species they came, as God had commanded Noah. Then the LORD shut him in.

All saved to go forth to Worship (Gen. 8:18-22) 18 So Noah came out, together with his wife and his sons and his sons’ wives; 19 and all the animals, wild and tame, all the birds, and all the creeping creatures of the earth left the ark, one kind after another. 20 Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and choosing from every clean animal and every clean bird, he offered holocausts on the altar. 21 WHEN the LORD smelled the sweet odor, he said to himself: “Never again will I doom the earth because of man, since the desires of man’s heart are evil from the start; nor will I ever again strike down all living beings, as I have done. 22 As long as the earth lasts, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.”

See also
2 Peter 3:5-10 John 1:14 John 10:28 Rom. 3:4 John 10:9 1 Thess. 4:14

Noah did a little talking with the Lord when he first got the request. He seems to felt he was not cut out for that kind of job. God insists. Noah obeys. A door is closed, A remnant is saved. The rest is amazing.

Makes me wonder: What does God want me to be if I grow up? How about you? Do you ever wonder about that? I hope so. It’s one of the gazillion ways God tries to get our attention, to get us thinking about things above instead of things here and elsewhere. As He did with Noah, when He really wants you to do something, He just won’t let it rest. I think that may be why we have the saying, “We are restless until we find our rest in God.”

Noah was a carpenter. Jesus was a Carpenter. Both of them cooperated with God and changed the world. “If I was a carpenter…” To tell you the truth, I’m terrible with carpentry tools. God gave me a way different toolbox. He won’t let me rest until I start using it. If I look at the tools He gave me, it’s pretty clear I’m not going to be building any arks. I’m going to be building something, though, that’s almost as big and complicated as an ark – at least that’s the way Noah and I both feel about it! And I’d best get on with it else I might find myself standing on the wrong side of the door.

Remember to continue to pray for
>>> JC as she starts college and still contends with a serious combination of illnesses
>>> KV as she deals with ongoing pain and really needs to sell her house
>>> CD for better working conditions
>>> JP, SC, JM, C&GW, and others dealing with various good-new/bad-news situations with cancer
>>> TT & CF as they embark on a new adventure
>>> All the MBN folks who have entrusted us with faith to take their needs to God
=+= JT, DT, ZT, CF, BW, KT, AS, AR, EV, RS, DH, CB, DN, MJ, MM, DG, JB, WT, GJ, ME, FO, and Lexy:
=+= “…a young child, male, by the name of Lexy. He had surgery on his head a year or so ago for a tumor and is facing an additional surgery for cancer on his neck. He takes radiation pills for certain different periods of time where he must stay in his room for 3 days and not have contact with many people other than his mother as I guess he is radioactive (?) at that point. They figure this is easier on him than radiation and chemo the usual way. This child is not a rowdy or show-off kind of kid, nor does he go around saying he is sick looking for sympathy. Do I know why a child [is ill?], no, but I am going to trust there is a reason and I will pray for Lexy to have the endurance to carry his cross.”
– Peace – real and lasting peace – in our hearts and minds, in our homes, in our nation, in our world
– The Called – like Noah – who can barely believe what God has chosen for them by gifting them with what it takes to do it
– Everyone who prays for you and everyone who asks for your prayers
– And – this is important – pray for and about YOU. You might be surprised by how attentive God can be. And when he calls, answer and rejoice.

Thanks for everything! I love you. Make it a great day: Give it to God and see what He can do with it.

Whatever, whenever, wherever, whoever, however, if ever, forever — at your service.

Aloha Friday Message – August 14, 2009

933AFC081409

Happy Aloha Friday, Beloved. Today I am thinking about God’s LOVE. It is so amazing that, if I did not believe in it, it would be incredible. It is credible, however, because we can see it and feel it in our lives, in our hearts and minds, and in the love we share among each other.

Before I get into how all that works, I want to add another Praise report. I got a nice note from JC recently, and she reports that along with her family and a host of physicians, she has decided on “watchful waiting.” Her sphenoid tumor (just behind the eyes and near the nasal bones) is still there, still growing slowly. Because it is a benign, slow-growing tumor, chemotherapy and radiation may not be effective. Because it is so close to her optic nerve and carotid artery, surgery is risky. We have a perfect opportunity to really get the Prayer Circle cranked up. I have chosen to pray for her daily at 7:16 AM – an odd time so that it is easy to remember. If you would join me – any time of any day – that would be great. Here’s the content of the prayer. You will note that it is asking for the intercession of Heavenly friends, too. Follow your own conscience there. The important thing is to pray with conviction “In faith believing” for that tumor to get gone. The persons mentioned are:

Blessed Damien de Veuester – the Pastor to the People at the Colony on Moloka`i
St. (Padre) Pio – The Priest from Petrelcina who bore the Stigmata
Charles – My dad
Merilee – My sister
Nikki – Nicole Amorette Southern, a very dear friend for years.
Julie – Timothy’s fraternal-twin sister.
David – Chorus Director for Kaua`i High School Chorus, JC’s teacher, and another long-time dear friend.

So let’s pray together (you can insert your own intentions in the Italics section if that’s easier for you)

Lord, it’s time to remember your servant, JC. Watch over her, Father. Bless her. Protect her. Guide her. Direct her. Keep her safe from every harm and danger in body, mind, and spirit. See to her temporal needs and continue to draw her to an ever-deeper spiritual awareness of and commitment to you through Jesus. Increase her faith and fill her with Light. We are placing this intention in the hands of Blessed Damien, knowing that he will carry it to your Precious Heart, and to assist him we ask St. Pio, Charles, Merilee, Nikki, Julie, and David to join him in petitioning you for her healing. We ask for a complete healing for JC. Take that tumor away, and make her whole. Pull it out of her with your own hand or guide the hands of the surgeons who take it from her. Bless her with hope, healing, and health. We anticipate the inevitable supernatural intervention of God – we expect a MIRACLE! Deliver her from the worries, the side-effects, and the discomforts this tumor brings and let her life be a testimony to the power of love and prayer. Amen!

Now, The Love of God:

It is an Everlasting Love (Jer. 31:3) With age-old love I have loved you; so I have kept my mercy toward you. (Isa. 55:3) 3 Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to David.

It is a Manifested Love (1 John 4:9-13) 9 In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. 10 In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us. 13 This is how we know that we remain in him and he in us, that he has given us of his Spirit.

It is a Redeeming Love (Isa. 63:9) Because of his love and pity he redeemed them himself, Lifting them and carrying them all the days of old. (Jude v. 21) 21: Keep yourselves in the love of God and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.

It is a Preserving Love (Rom. 8:38, 39) 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers,
39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Now, this next one isn’t exactly in the Bible, but maybe you are familiar with it.

It is Way-Cool Love
Isa. 54:10 10 Though the mountains leave their place and the hills be shaken, My love shall never leave you nor my covenant of peace be shaken, says the LORD, who has mercy on you.
Isa 49:15 15 Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you.

1 John 2: 5 But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him. This is the way we may know that we are in union with him: 6 whoever claims to abide in him ought to live (just) as he lived.

And we can. We can live just as he lived if we live in his Love.

Whatever, whenever, wherever, whoever, however, if ever, forever — at your service.

Aloha Friday Message – August 7, 2009

932AFC080709

Happy Aloha Friday, Beloved! I am thinking today about how God never ceases to love us and bless us. First a little story – on of those that flutters around the Internet occasionally, and after that an invitation to pray.

GOD WANTS ME

One day I happened to call a man on business who I didn’t know, have not nor will probably ever talk to again. But this day, he felt like talking. He was head of security at a company that had invited the remaining members of a company who had been decimated by the attack on the Twin Towers to share their office space. With his voice full of awe, he told me stories of why these people were alive and their counterparts were dead.

All the stories were just little things. You might know about the head of the company who got in late that day because his son started kindergarten. Another fellow was alive because it was his turn to bring donuts. There were other stories that I hope and pray will someday be gathered and put in a book. The one that struck me was the man who put on a new pair of shoes that morning. He took the various means to get to work, but before he got there, he developed a blister on his foot. He stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid. That is why he is alive.

Now when I am stuck in traffic, miss an elevator, turn back to answer a ringing telephone … all the little things that annoy me … I think to myself, this is exactly where God wants me to be at this very moment. May God continue to bless you with all those annoying little things. THAT STILL SMALL VOICE

Have you ever been just sitting there and all of a sudden you feel like doing something nice for someone you care for…THAT’S GOD…He talks to you through the Holy Spirit.

Have you ever been down and out and nobody seems to be around for you to talk to…THAT’S GOD…He wants you to talk to Him.

Have you ever been thinking about somebody that you haven’t seen in a long time and then next thing you know you see them or receive a phone call from them…THAT’S GOD…there is no such thing as “coincidence.”

Have you ever received something wonderful that you didn’t even ask for, like money in the mail, a debt that had mysteriously been cleared, or a coupon to a department store where you had just seen something you wanted, but couldn’t afford …THAT’S GOD…He places in you the desires of your heart…

Have you ever been in a situation and you had no clue how it is going to get better, but now you look back on it…THAT’S GOD…He passes us through tribulation to see a brighter day..

DO YOU THINK THAT THIS E-MAIL WAS ACCIDENTALLY SENT TO YOU? NOPE! I was thinking of you! Please pass this along and share the Power of God…In all that we do, we should totally give HIM thanks and our blessings will continue to multiply.

This message was sent to me by a close friend so please pass it on to all of your good friends.

Back in the days when I was doing “Management Training” one of the things I encourage people to do was to write their own Mission Statement. Mine is hanging on the wall in my office and every once in a while – particularly when I am tired and frustrated – I read it. It helps me remember why I do what I do. It begins like this:

My mission is to be a helper, whether by leading or by following, in all of the roles in my life.

🙂 The first role is that of a family member. My mission is a sacred vocation to be son and brother, husband and father.

🙂 The second role is that of intercessor. My mission is a willing obligation to be instant and constant in prayer for others.

🙂 The third role is that of a servant. My mission is a prudent use of my God-given abilities to acquire and use knowledge and skills which can be an encouragement to others.

I am inviting you to join me in that second role today, and every day until the next Aloha Friday. Please give this a try. If you can have friends and family join you, so much the better!

God calls His people to bless them so that they bless Him by blessing each other. We lift our hearts and minds to pray for one another:

Father, you call all of us to seek you in many ways. May each of us find that way that brings us closest to you. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord hear our prayer.

We pray for those who help and guide us on the way to finding our Peace in You. Give them strength to share with us when we are weak. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord hear our prayer.

We pray for who are overcome with struggling against their weaknesses. Show them mercy by infusing them with your Wisdom so they will see where strength is found. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord hear our prayer.

We pray for those among us everywhere who are suffering because of illness in body, mind, or spirit. Let them find comfort in the loving prayers we offer on their behalf. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord hear our prayer.

We pray for every person who lives in fear because of acts of terror, anger, war, or abuse and neglect. May we find ways to bless them with temporal and spiritual charity. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord hear our prayer.

We pray for those who indulge unhealthy appetites for what the world offers. Deliver them from their desire to appease themselves in themselves, and let their appetite lead them to the banquet of your love. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord hear our prayer.

We pray that in all things we will remember that you want us, just as we are, so that in us and through us the world will com to know there is no other god like our God and no better blessing than serving You. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord hear our prayer.

We pray for those who have committed their live to you and gained your salvation. For those who are working to purify their souls through prayers and offerings of love to you and for us, we ask for pardon and peace. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord hear our prayer.

Gracious God, hear the prayers of your servants today and grant us the Peace that surpasses all understanding through Jesus, the Christ, who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Lord, may the blessing we long for be the strength of your faithful people, so that they will never be in conflict with your will. May your blessing always prompt them to give thanks for your unmerited favors.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Make it a wonderful day, Beloved, the beginning of a wonderful week of prayer.

PRAISE REPORT: SC and CC share that S is now cancer-free and finishing her therapy. Their world is filled with joy and laughter. WAY COOL!!

Whatever, whenever, wherever, whoever, however, if ever, forever — at your service.

Aloha Friday Message – July 24, 2009

Without GOD, our week would be: Sinday, Mournday, Tearsday, Wasteday, Thirstday, Fightday & Shatterday. Pass it on. Remember seven days WITHOUT GOD makes one WEAK!!

~~~Thanks to MBN member SE for passing that along!
When we were in Portland, we saw thousands of roses, and it reminded me of this little story:
The Rosebud
A young, new preacher was walking with an older, more seasoned preacher in the garden one day and feeling a bit insecure about what God had for him to do. He asked the older preacher what was his purpose. The older preacher walked up to a rosebush and handed the young preacher a rosebud and told him to open it without tearing off any petals. The young preacher looked in disbelief at the older preacher and was trying to figure out what a rosebud could possibly have to do with his wanting to know the WILL OF GOD for his life and for his ministry. Because of his high respect for the older preacher, he proceeded to TRY to unfold the rose, while keeping every petal intact.
It wasn’t long before he realized how impossible it was to do. Noticing the younger preacher’s inability to unfold the rosebud while keeping it intact, the older preacher began to recite the following poem.
UNFOLDING THE ROSEBUD
It is only a tiny rosebud,
A flower of GOD’s design;
But I cannot unfold the petals
With these clumsy hands of mine.
The secret of unfolding flowers,
Is not known to such as I;
GOD opens this flower so sweetly
When in my hands they fade and die.
If I cannot unfold a rosebud,
This flower of GOD’s design;
Then how can I think I have wisdom
To unfold this life of mine?
So I’ll trust in Him for His leading,
Each moment of every day;
I will look to Him for His guidance
Each step of this pilgrim way.
The pathway that lies before me,
Only my Heavenly Father knows;
I’ll trust Him to unfold the moments
Just as He unfolds the rose.
Whatever, whenever, wherever, whoever, however, if ever — at your service
Aloha Friday Message – July 17, 2009
929AFC071709
Special thanks to DG for sending me this. It is such a good message I decided to just send the whole thing. It ties in nicely with an article I read in Living With Christ by Pat Livingston (April Edition, Living With Christ, pp 22-23). The title was “Don’t Let the Devil Steal Your Joy.” You know he would love to do that, the Old Liar! Well, this poor kid let the Devil steal his joy. Read on to see what happened to him because of that theft!
There was a little boy visiting his grandparents on their farm.
He was given a slingshot to play with out in the woods.
He practiced in the woods; but he could never hit the target.
Getting a little discouraged, he headed back for dinner.
As he was walking back he saw Grandma’s pet duck.
Just out of impulse, he let the slingshot fly, hit the duck square in the head and killed it. He was shocked and grieved!
In a panic, he hid the dead duck in the wood pile; only to see his Sister watching! Sally had seen it all, but she said nothing.
After lunch the next day Grandma said, ‘Sally, let’s wash the dishes’
But Sally said, ‘Grandma, Johnny told me he wanted to help in the kitchen.’
Then she whispered to him, “Remember the duck?’
So Johnny did the dishes.
Later that day, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing and Grandma said, ‘I’m sorry but I need Sally to help make supper.’
Sally just smiled and said, ‘well that’s all right because Johnny told me he wanted to help?
She whispered again, ‘Remember the duck?’ So Sally went fishing and Johnny stayed to help.
After several days of Johnny doing both his chores and Sally’s; he finally couldn’t stand it any longer.
He came to Grandma and confessed that he had killed the duck.
Grandma knelt down, gave him a hug, and said, ‘Sweetheart, I know… You see, I was standing at the window and I saw the whole thing, but because I love you, I forgave you. I was just wondering how long you would let Sally make a slave of you.’
Thought for the day and every day thereafter:
Whatever is in your past, whatever you have done… And the devil keeps throwing it up in your face (lying, cheating, debt, fear, bad habits, hatred, anger, bitterness, carnality, etc.) …whatever it is…You need to know that:
God was standing at the window and He saw the whole thing.
He has seen your whole life…. He wants you to know that He loves you and that you are forgiven. He’s just wondering how long you will let the devil make a slave of you.
The great thing about God is that when you ask for forgiveness; He not only forgives you, but He forgets.
It is by God’s grace and mercy that we are saved.
Go ahead and make the difference in someone’s life today.
Share this with a friend and always remember:
God is at the window!
When Jesus died on the cross … he was thinking of you!
That’s a pretty good lesson, yes? I want to share one other thing with you for today. Look at Mark 1:19-20. Now, think about the guys who were left behind, sitting in the boat. Why were they not called? Next look at the whole chapter of John 21. I’ve been thinking of these two passages all week, and I want to share with you about them next week. Meanwhile, “keep the cards and letters coming,” and certainly pray for those who are ill, who are unemployed, who are hurting financially or emotionally or physically. Pray for the oppressed who are subject to terror every moment. Pray for the marginalized and disadvantaged. Pray especially for those who are experiencing most of these things together – yes, I do know of people in those terrible straits – and ask God to deliver them. Then, when you have prayed well, get up, and follow the Lord’s leading to do something about it. And while you’re at it take a moment to pray for those whose vocation it is to serve God by serving others in His name. They are the thin line between The Liar and The Truth.
Today I’m sending something a little lighter than usual, but still it has some thoughts that may cause you to smile or nod your head in agreement. This may have been around for a while, so it has passed the test of time. If there’s one of these that particularly strikes your fancy, let me know about it.
An Old Farmer’s Advice:
* Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight, and bull-strong.
*Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.
*Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.
* A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.
* Words that soak into your ears are whispered…not yelled.
* Meanness don’t jes’ happen overnight.
* Forgive your enemies. It messes up their heads.
* Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you.
* It don’t take a very big person to carry a grudge.
* You cannot unsay a cruel word.
* Every path has a few puddles.
* When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.
* It’s always easier to ride a horse in the direction he’s goin’.
* The best sermons are lived, not preached.
* Most of the stuff people worry about ain’t never gonna happen anyway.
* Don’t judge folks by their relatives.
* Happiness ain’t havin’ what ya want. It’s wantin’ what ya have.
* Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
* Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll enjoy it a second time.
* Don’t interfere with somethin’ that ain’t bothering you none.
* Timing has a lot to do with the success of a rain dance.
* If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin’.
* Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got.
* Don’t squat with your spurs on.
* The biggest troublemaker you’ll probably ever have to deal with pro’ly watches you from the mirror every morning.
* Always drink upstream from the herd.
* Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.
* Lettin’ the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin’ it back in.
* If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody else’s dog around.
* Wanna know about the “influence” I got? Punch your fist in yonder barrel of rainwater and pull’r out real fast! The hole that’s left is how much influence is mine.
* Live simply, love generously, care deeply, and speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.
* Splurgin’ on some choc’late oncet in a while is some pretty good advice, too!
Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just shoot you. ‘Course his aim pro’ly ain’t all that good so don’t sweat it!
Please remember KV in your prayers (in addition to the folks recommended to you over the past couple of weeks). Lots of pain caused by multiple illnesses has really been a challenge for her. Don’t forget your prayerful support of our soldiers and their leaders, all the people whose vocation it is to serve God by serving others in every land, and especially pray for the children who live under horrendous conditions of famine, war, terror, abuse and neglect, and diseases which steal away their young lives. Thanks and a tip-o’-the-hat to CW for sending this.
Many of you know, I believe, that Crucita and I have 4 cats: Mimi, Hercules, Frankie, and Zoë. Living with cats leads to a kind of Science one can only appreciate after being allowed to live with a cat for an extended period. This Science is called Cat Physics. Here are some examples:
Law of Cat Magnetism
All blue blazers and black sweaters attract cat hair in direct proportion to the darkness of the fabric.
Law of Cat Thermodynamics
Heat flows from a warmer to a cooler body, except in the case of a cat, in which case all heat flows to the cat.
Law of Cat Stretching
A cat will stretch to a distance proportional to the length of the nap just taken.
Law of Cat Sleeping
All cats must sleep with people whenever possible, in a position as uncomfortable for the people involved, and as comfortable as possible for the cat.
Law of Cat Elongation
A cat can make her body long enough to reach just about any countertop that has anything remotely interesting on it.
Law of Cat Obstruction
A cat must stretch out on the floor in such a position to obstruct the maximum amount of human foot traffic.
Law of Dinner Table Attendance
Cats must attend all meals when anything good is served.
Law of Cat Acceleration
A cat will accelerate at a constant rate, until he gets good and ready to stop.
Law of Rug Configuration
No rug may remain in its naturally flat state when a cat is present.
Law of Obedience Resistance
A cat’s resistance varies in proportion to a human’s desire for her to do something.
Second Law of Energy Conservation
Cats know that energy can only be stored by a lot of napping.
Law of Refrigerator Observation
If a cat watches a refrigerator long enough, someone will come along and take out something good to eat.
Law of Electric Blanket Attraction
Turn on an electric blanket and a cat will jump into bed at the speed of light.
Law of Random Comfort Seeking
A cat will always seek the most comfortable spot in any given room.
Law of Bag/Box Occupancy
All bags and boxes in a given room must contain a cat within the earliest possible nanosecond.
First Law of Energy Conservation
Cats know that energy can neither be created nor destroyed and will, therefore, they use as little energy as possible.
Second Law of Energy Conservation
Letting the cat out of the bag is nowhere near as traumatic as trying to put the cat in the bag — unless of course the cat gets in of it’s own volition. Then it will try very hard to stay there. The entropy of an isolated cat not in equilibrium will tend to increase over time, approaching a maximum value at equilibrium. (See
Law of Bag/Box Occupancy)
Law of probability
Cats are super good at doing what is least expected of them in any way, shape, or form especially if it has anything to do with jumping or going around corners.
There will be a quiz on this on Monday.
MIMI HAS SPOKEN!!
I suggest you spend this weekend studying!
🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
Remember me
I promise
Promise me
I’ll remember
A promise isn’t much good unless it is remembered. The person(s) making the promise must remember it, and the person(s) promised must also remember it. Better yet, they must both remember it the same way or else one or the other could be mistaken about whether or not the promise was fulfilled. With the remembering of the promise comes the expectation that it will be fulfilled. When it is not, then usually there is a hurt to be dealt with. Failure to keep a promise requires something to be done to help restore the relationship between the parties involved.
There are many different kinds of promises ranging from “pinkie-swear” to The New Covenant. There are assurances and insurances, agreements and oaths, pledges and contracts, vows and guarantees and warranties. Persons or things that “show promise” have untapped potential. The most remarkable promises, I think, are called covenants. This is a very special kind of promise. A covenant is a binding agreement between two parties where each pledges to the other to faithfully fulfill the promise even if the other party fails to. That is a very strong promise, and for most of us, very difficult to make and even more difficult to keep.
God has made several covenants with humanity – Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David – all of these were participants in covenants. The most recent of God’s covenants is The New Covenant. Like all the other covenants, the requirement is that both sides remember the promise. God promises to send salvation and asks us to remember that He gave us life and the choice to live it with Him. God promises to refrain from destruction by flood and asks us to remember to honor him. God promises to love and protect and asks us to remember that by being obedient. God promises to be faithful to us and asks us to remember to be faithful to him. God promises to provide everything we need and asks us to remember He is the source of it all. And finally, when we had proven time and again we could not keep our side of the covenant, He made both sides of the covenant His responsibility in Jesus. And what did Jesus ask of us when we claim His promise through The New Covenant? “Do this in remembrance of me.” Whenever we forget to remember, He remembers for us by remembering the promise and forgiving our forgetfulness. He forgives our failure to keep our promise.
Failing to keep a promise in our human relationships can have long-lasting and often terrible effects. “I promise to love you forever.” “I promise to stop drinking.” “I promise I’ll be there on time.” “I promise I won’t break my promise.” All of us know situations where broken promises have led to broken hearts and sometimes broken families or broken lives. For God, forgetting our failures is in His nature. For us, it seems, our nature is more inclined toward remembering our failures whether they are our own or someone else’s.
“I can forgive, but I’ll never forget.” “I can never forgive that, never in a million years.” “That was unforgivable.” “I cannot forgive and I will not forget what s/he did.” Beloved, God created us in His image so that we can forgive. Forgetting takes a lot more effort for humans because we are human; but we can get closer by remembering we can promise to forgive. When we forgive, we move closer to being the person God created us to be – someone like Him who chooses to forgive, chooses to love, and chooses to remember only the good stuff. In Him and through Him we find it is easier to be like Him, and that makes it easier to be in Him because He is in us.
In the MBN, we have promised to pray for, with, and about each other. I remember that promise when I get news about a member, or even hear about someone on the news, who needs our prayerful support. Once in a while we also get news that prayer has played a role in improving someone’s life. Here’s a short list of pending requests and two great praise reports:
GOOD news. SC – doctor says 100% cancer free. Only radiation follow-up and periodic monitoring to go. GW – Continued remission on that tumor. JC – Waiting for word on that sphenoid tumor – not malignant, but still present. So we’re continuing to pray that it will be gone before they have to cut it out.
Continued needs: J.T. – Continued prayers for recovery from infected surgical wound, needs meaningful work for income. J.H. – Strength to move on after very bad news. C.D. – Needs work closer to home to be able to spend more time with family and less money traveling. D.T. – Recovering from hip surgery – many more weeks to go. J.P. – Getting better in some ways after chemo, but other problems have developed. S.K. – Laid off and really needs to find another job. N.S. – Struggling with forgiveness for former family member. B.Z. Declining health in nursing home. Asks for assurances of salvation. D.P. – Possibly early Alzheimer’s. Family asks for strength to help. A.P. – Difficult family situation to work through. Pray for wisdom in the choices that have to be made. I.M. – Struggling with faith and commitment. J.C. – Beginning a new life of service soon. Asks for prayers to be open to God’s leading (this is another JC). P.G. – Feeling the effects of aging and thinking about “Going Home.”
Pray for our leaders. We are in perilous times, and their decisions should be made with morality, compassion, wisdom, and justice so we can all live together in peace. Pray for the people whose lives are now desperate because of the immoral, uncompassionate, unwise, or unjust decisions made by other leaders. Pray for sinners like us who need to remember to forgive. Pray for your own needs in confidence that God will hear you and your loved ones will join you.
These are a few of the reports and requests that are ongoing. As I often say in closing, pray for the people, Beloved. Pray for ALL the people. Promise to remember? Remember the Promise.
Whatever, whenever, wherever, whoever, however, if ever, forever — at your service, Beloved
